About Bode Willumsen
Bode Willumsen (1895–1987) was a prominent Danish ceramist, sculptor and painter who carved out a distinctive place for himself within Danish handicrafts and ceramics. He was the son of the renowned artist JF Willumsen and began his career as a blacksmith before training as a draftsman at Bing & Grøndahl and the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory. Willumsen was particularly known for his stoneware works, where he often incorporated small reliefs and figures of people and animals on lids and handles, which gave his works a special pictorial expression.
In the 1930s he established his own workshop and handled all aspects of production himself, from building kilns to selling his works. His works were marked by a strong primitivism, often with stone-like surfaces and flowing glazes. Axel Salto, another famous Danish ceramist, worked for a period in Willumsen's workshop and benefited from his technical knowledge.
After World War II, Willumsen returned to the Royal Porcelain Factory and created, among other things, a number of popular, satirical blanc de chine figures, such as the Blacksmith, the Painter and the Potter's Wife. He marked his 50th birthday with the magnificent Milestone of Time, a large lidded jar depicting the development of humanity up to modern times, including Niels Bohr's atomic theory.
